Almost everyone the world over is relieved to say goodbye to 2020.
A global pandemic, recession, police brutality, racism, a country divided, devastating hurricanes and wildfires. Almost all dental practices had to close, many businesses shuttered, trips cancelled, and schools shut down. It’s been a most challenging time.
The year has been challenging for me on a personal level, as well. In the midst of a global pandemic, I was in the hospital undergoing triple bypass open heart surgery. I have recovered well and have profound respect for frontline workers, doctors, nurses, caregivers, and so many essential workers.
Even in the darkest times, I have found happiness in different ways. I have realized that technology, at times frustrating, can be a blessing. Trojan has been able to continue operating with almost everyone working from home. I have attended a wedding, a Bar mitzvah, and two funerals on Zoom. My extended family has a Zoom happy hour twice a month, which we are likely to continue even after COVID-19 is history. I really like “tele-visits” with doctors. And when we’ve had enough technology? My husband and I have read more books and watched more Netflix this past year than ever before.
Now we begin a new year, armed with knowledge to meet the challenges. We know much more as to how to protect ourselves and the most vulnerable. Dental office visits are safer than trips to the grocery store. At a recent visit to my dentist, I was impressed with the extent of precautions — even changing protective tape on the computer mouse before another person touches it.
We have embraced a new normal. My grandchildren attend college and high school from their bedrooms. We can see light at the end of this tunnel. We will get through this.
You provide a most valuable service and set a great example. My wish to you is for a Healthy New Year filled with Happiness found in unexpected ways.
